Student Defense Project

Please note that this project, though initiated by Law In Action, is now run by Legal Services. Therefore, all inquiries should be directed to Legal Services at (864) 679-3254. LIA continues to support the Student Defense Project by recruiting local volunteer attorneys.
History of the Student Defense Project
When this project was initiated, its goal was to help provide free
lawyers for indigent parents whose kids faced expulsion from Greenville
County Schools. We were able to recruit lawyer volunteers quickly
thanks to the willingness of local attorneys to donate their time, but
the school district resisted our efforts by refusing to provide parents
with a contact number so the free lawyers could be assigned.
For nearly five years, Law In Action, with the help of newspaper
stories, editorials, billboards, etc. campaigned to convince the school
district to include the contact number in its notification to parents.
Finally in 2007, the district relented and now each parent whose child faces
expulsion is given the contact number for the local and state offices of
Legal Services, including the direct number to find a free lawyer.
Now that Law In Action has reached its goals of lawyer recruitment and
parent notification, it is closing down the Student Defense Project and
handing over our volunteer lawyers to Legal Services, our original
partners in this effort. Legal Services now runs this program and any inquiries should be directed to them.
